A Global Mission

The Ocean Census is a global mission to discover, document and share the diversity of life in our ocean — before it’s lost.

Accelerate Species Discovery

National and philanthropic marine research institutes, museums and universities play a central role in the Ocean Census – leading, participating and contributing to species discovery, expeditions, workshops, unlocking legacy collections, data publishing, advancing related biodiversity research, and policy and public engagement.

Join the Ocean Census Alliance of scientific partners worldwide that are reimagining discovery and shaping the future of marine science.

Access
Funding & Research Support

Bring together marine taxonomists and researchers to analyse and classify newly collected specimens or legacy collections.

Collaborate on deep-sea and coastal missions by providing scientific expertise, laboratory support, or research vessels to expand data collection and analysis.

Use Ocean Census samples, DNA sequencing, and high-resolution imaging to accelerate the description of new marine species.

Help support the Census and build a comprehensive digital library of marine life by registering newly discovered species and contributing species data from your institution’s research, ensuring global access to biodiversity information.

Encourage staff to apply for Species Discovery Awards to advance taxonomy, genetics, and biodiversity researc

Success Stories from the Alliance

Jyotika Virmani

Executive Director, Schmidt Ocean Institute

“The strength of the Ocean Census lies in its vast network. By uniting governments, philanthropic supporters, and leading marine research organisations, we can accelerate the discovery of ocean life at an unprecedented scale. Our recent Pacific expeditions aboard Falkor (too) contributed various new species, underscoring the power of truly global cooperation.”

Species Discovery Awards

The Ocean Census Species Discovery Awards provide funding for outstanding scientists taxonomists, biodiversity and community scientists involved in marine species discovery. These awards help:

  • Expand global taxonomy capacity by funding research in high-, middle-, and low-income nations.
  • Unlocks legacy collections: of unclassified marine species thought to be new to science.
  • Drive innovation in biodiversity research, using automation and collaborative research networks.

The Ocean Census Biodiversity
Data Platform

The Ocean Census Biodiversity Data Platform is an open-access publishing platform designed for species discovery data providing:

  • Centralised data access – All discoveries are catalogued and made publicly available for research, conservation, and policymaking.
  • Genetic & imaging integration – Includes DNA sequencing data, high-resolution imaging, and ecological metadata.
  • Global collaboration – Connects taxonomists, conservationists, and policymakers with the latest marine biodiversity data.

The beta version, developed in partnership with the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre, is now accessible to researchers and the public alike. The platform is still in development and more features will be added including visualisation and data analysis tools. We invite you to test the beta version and send feedback to science@oceancensus.org.
